The new record-breaking roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure is set to open just in time for the upcoming season. The final name for the new ride—which was initially known as “Project Purple”—has finally been announced: Bakunawa.

Until the end of the 2024 season, Kingda Ka—at the time the world’s tallest and second-fastest roller coaster—was located at the American amusement park Six Flags Great Adventure. It and the Green Lantern stand-up coaster were situated together in a corner of the park. Both rides were demolished in 2025 to make way for a new record-breaking roller coaster. The new ride was unveiled earlier this year as Project Purple. On July 29, the official name was announced. The new roller coaster will be called Bakunawa.

The new ride is an Extreme Spinning Coaster from the German manufacturer Mack Rides. One truly unique feature is that this Spinning Coaster has floorless cars. These provide a more open riding experience, as the cars can spin freely. In addition, riders are launched a total of three times. The first launch accelerates from 0 to 60 mph, the second from 60 to 80 mph, and the third from 80 to 100 mph. During the ride, we’ll experience a zero-G stall (an extended upside-down section) and climb a tall “tower.”

This roller coaster holds no fewer than six world records:

  • the world’s fastest spinning coaster
  • the tallest spinning coaster
  • the world’s fastest inversion
  • the world’s longest stall
  • the world’s first floorless spinning coaster
  • the world’s first upside down launch

Story

From the depths of the dark sea, an ancient serpent with shimmering purple scales awakens. Bakunawa is a mythical creature from folklore that rises to devour the moon. Those brave enough can join the serpent on its journey to the sky.
