Universal Orlando has announced a new indoor roller coaster for its newest theme park, Epic Universe. The attraction will be located in Dark Universe and will immerse guests in an all-new story inspired by Universal’s classic movie monsters. Construction is already underway, although an opening date has yet to be announced. The announcement marks the first official confirmation of the type of attraction planned for the expansion site, which has been the subject of speculation among theme park fans for months.
On November 5, 2026, Universal Orlando Resort confirmed that Dark Universe will be expanded with another roller coaster. The new attraction will be located directly next to the existing dark ride, “Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.” Its storyline will once again draw inspiration from Universal’s extensive collection of classic movie monsters.
For now, Universal is keeping further details under wraps. Neither the coaster’s name nor its manufacturer, ride system or exact storyline has been revealed. The company has also not provided a specific opening timeframe, stating only that the attraction is expected to open in the coming years. Additional information will be shared at a later date.
Months of Speculation Surrounding the Dark Universe Expansion
Speculation about a possible expansion of Dark Universe began long before the official announcement. Initial construction permits and planning documents pointed to a major development project in spring 2026. Further plans later emerged for a multi-story building covering approximately 8,700 square meters (93,600 square feet). The first visible site preparation work finally began in August.
One of the most widely discussed possibilities was a water-based attraction themed to the classic Universal monster “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” A potential ride system was Mack Rides’ so-called “Rocking Boat,” developed by the German manufacturer. The innovative system combines elements of a boat ride with dynamic movements and roller coaster-like track sections. The technology made its debut in 2025 with “Mission Bermudes” at Futuroscope in France.
In recent months, additional rumors suggested that the expansion could instead feature an indoor roller coaster with a storyline centered around the Bride of Frankenstein. The latest announcement now confirms that Universal is indeed planning an indoor coaster. However, whether any of the rumored themes will become reality remains to be seen.

Dark Universe Brings Universal’s Classic Movie Monsters to Life
Dark Universe is one of five themed worlds at Universal Epic Universe, which officially opened in Orlando on May 22, 2025. Dedicated to Universal’s classic movie monsters, the area transports guests to the eerie village of Darkmoor. Here, visitors can encounter Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula and other familiar characters from Universal’s classic horror films.
Dark Universe currently features two major rides. In the elaborate dark ride “Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment,” guests find themselves caught in the middle of a monster uprising after an experiment conducted by Dr. Victoria Frankenstein goes horribly wrong. Meanwhile, the family roller coaster “Curse of the Werewolf” takes riders through a forest inhabited by werewolves aboard spinning ride vehicles. The themed world also features restaurants, shops and character encounters with Universal’s iconic monsters.
In addition to Dark Universe, Epic Universe features “Super Nintendo World,” “How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk” and “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.” These four areas are connected by the central “Celestial Park,” which is also home to the large dueling roller coaster “Stardust Racers.” The park’s concept revolves around distinct themed worlds that guests enter through elaborately designed portals.

More New Attractions and Experiences Coming to Universal Orlando Resort
Alongside the newly announced indoor roller coaster at Epic Universe, several other projects are already in development across Universal Orlando Resort. Most of these were announced previously and are expected to expand the offerings at the resort’s theme parks and CityWalk entertainment district over the coming years.
Later in 2026, Universal Studios Florida is set to debut a reimagined version of the “Universal Horror Make-Up Show,” which will also incorporate productions from horror film studio Blumhouse. Another major addition is planned for 2027 with “Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift,” a new roller coaster that will immerse guests in the world of the popular film franchise.
Universal Islands of Adventure is also set to receive a new addition in 2027. A new full-service restaurant is being developed in the Jurassic Park themed area, further expanding the park’s dining options.
Outside the theme parks, “Luke Combs’ Category 10” is also scheduled to open. The new music and entertainment venue at Universal CityWalk is expected to debut in late 2027 and will be themed around American country music artist Luke Combs.
With these previously announced projects and the newly confirmed indoor roller coaster in Dark Universe, Universal Orlando continues to expand and develop its resort. For now, the opening date and storyline of the upcoming Epic Universe attraction remain unknown.
