The Danish amusement park Djurs Sommerland is expanding its attraction lineup with a new roller coaster for the 2027 season. Named “Midgårdsormen”, the new addition to the Vikingeland themed area will become the tallest and fastest Hot Racer in Europe. It will also be the first roller coaster in Djurs Sommerland’s history to turn riders upside down.

The new attraction is part of a major 15,000-square-metre expansion of the park. Combining two launches, three inversions and a top speed of 75 km/h, “Midgårdsormen” is designed to bridge the gap between a family coaster and a more thrilling ride experience.

Three inversions and two launches

The 603-metre-long track will reach a maximum height of 23 metres. During the approximately 107-second ride, the trains will experience two launches and navigate a total of three inversions. This will make “Midgårdsormen” the first roller coaster at Djurs Sommerland to feature elements that turn riders upside down.

In addition to its inversions, the layout will feature rapid changes of direction, airtime and a variety of dynamic track elements. Riders must be at least 1.20 metres tall to experience the attraction. Once it opens, “Midgårdsormen” will become the tenth roller coaster at the Danish amusement park.

Europe’s second Hot Racer

“Midgårdsormen” is a Hot Racer manufactured by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Intamin. The model belongs to the Single Rail Coaster category and features a single, wide rail combined with trains that seat one rider per row. This design allows for rapid changes of direction and a particularly dynamic ride experience.

“Midgårdsormen” will be only the second Hot Racer to open in Europe. The continent’s only existing installation of this model is “Mahuka”, which opened at the French amusement park Walibi Rhône-Alpes in 2024. At 23 metres tall and with a top speed of 75 km/h, the new roller coaster at Djurs Sommerland will become Europe’s tallest and fastest Hot Racer.

Midgårdsormen expands Vikingeland

The new roller coaster will be integrated into the park’s existing Vikingeland themed area. The name “Midgårdsormen” refers to the Midgard Serpent from Norse mythology, a giant sea serpent that plays a central role in the legends surrounding the Norse gods.

The roller coaster is part of a 15,000-square-metre expansion of the park. Djurs Sommerland has not yet revealed further details about the design of the expanded area or how the new attraction will be integrated into Vikingeland.

“Midgårdsormen” is scheduled to open during the 2027 season. Djurs Sommerland has not yet announced an exact opening date.
