Dutch theme park Efteling has announced a major new attraction for 2029. “Missie Luminar” will be the park’s first Suspended Launch Coaster and will be built close to the main entrance. Efteling is investing around €50 million in the new roller coaster and its surrounding themed environment.

During the ride, which will last more than two minutes, guests will travel in vehicles suspended beneath the track and accelerate onto the course via a launch. The new roller coaster will reach a top speed of up to 80 km/h and further expand Efteling’s thrill ride offering.

An expedition in search of the light barrier

The story of “Missie Luminar” begins inside a scientific institute. From there, guests embark on an expedition into the unknown with one ultimate goal: to break through the so-called light barrier.

After launching out of the institute, the coaster will take riders through a variety of high-speed track elements. Efteling has also announced several moments of weightlessness throughout the ride. The new roller coaster will be manufactured by Dutch company Vekoma. Further technical details, including the track length and maximum height, have not yet been revealed.

The area surrounding the new attraction will also feature extensive theming. Its design will draw inspiration from fascinating natural phenomena, scientific experiments and the great expeditions of the 19th century.

A new thrill ride for Efteling

With “Missie Luminar”, Efteling is adding a type of roller coaster that has never previously been featured at the park. The combination of suspended vehicles and a launch is expected to create a particularly dynamic ride experience, despite a top speed of 80 km/h.

“Missie Luminar will be a fantastic addition to our thrill ride offering. Efteling has never had a roller coaster of this kind before. It will reach a top speed of up to 80 km/h and will probably feel considerably faster to our guests,” explains Efteling CEO Fons Jurgens.

The location of the roller coaster will also play an important role in the overall experience. Trains speeding along the track will already be visible around the park entrance, giving arriving guests an early glimpse of what awaits them inside.

Part of the “Island of the Five Senses”

“Missie Luminar” will become part of the “Island of the Five Senses” themed area near Efteling’s main entrance. The area already includes the House of the Five Senses, the Efteling Grand Hotel, the Efteling Theater and the “Aquanura” water show.

The themed area centres around the ideas of travelling, arriving and setting off on new journeys. With the addition of the new roller coaster, the area will gain another major attraction in 2029.

“Missie Luminar” is scheduled to open in 2029. Until then, Efteling is expected to gradually reveal further details about the new roller coaster and its themed environment.
